For my second morning in Berlin, I decided to stop by Chipps for breakfast. The restaurant, located in a quiet area of Mitte, has become popular for their freshly prepared dishes using seasonal and quality ingredients.
Chipps was located on the corner of a small street adjacent to a small open grassy area in the heart of Mitte. Even though I was in the center of Berlin, the area was quiet. I felt like the place was miles away from any tourist crowds.
Adjacent to the restaurant was a spacious outdoor area, popular on those warm and sunny days. Unfortunately, I was in Berlin in the middle of the cold winter which meant that the patio was closed.
When I walked inside, the restaurant was quite busy. There were a few open tables, but on further inspection, I noticed that many of them were reserved.
After standing around for a good ten minutes, a server finally walked over and greeted me. Hungry and cold, she walked me over to a table next to the open kitchen.

Interior of Chipps
The first thing that caught my attention when I walked into Chipps was the open layout and modern interior.
You will find tall ceilings, light wooden tables, and gray walls along with half wooden, half polished concrete floors. Hanging from the black ceilings were gray and gold plated round lights.
The decor felt modern, clean, industrial, and trendy without being pretentious.
At the front of the restaurant was a small salad bar area adjacent to an open kitchen. I’m a huge fan of open kitchens as you can watch food being prepared, cooked, and plated by the chef and staff.
Surrounding the bar and open kitchen was the L-shaped dining room with wooden tables placed next to large, floor to ceiling panoramic glass windows. Since it was such a cold winter day in Berlin, I was glad to sit next to the big glass windows which allowed in lots of warm and natural light.
Chipps Menu
The first thing that I noticed with the breakfast menu at Chipps were the quirky names. Sugar Daddy, The Morning After, Bed Head, Double Vision, and Walk of Shame….you get the point.
The menu contained a wide variety of dishes that were designed to please meat lovers, vegetarians, and vegans. You will find both sweet and savory options. Almost every food item on the menu could be made with meat or vegan, just make sure you notify your server.
Since I couldn’t decide on whether to order the hot chocolate or orange juice, I decided to just go ahead and order both.
Though the serving was large, the hot chocolate was a bit of a letdown, especially after having the extremely light and frothy cream topped hot chocolate the morning before at Factory Girl!
The dark hot chocolate drink at Chipps tasted watery instead of frothy. The chocolate was bitter instead of sweet. Cheap powdered chocolate was definitely used to make the drink.
The freshly squeezed orange juice was, well, freshly squeezed. It was sweet and fresh, just like it should be.
If orange juice isn’t your thing, you also have the option of grapefruit juice.
Another thing to note: if you are going to order water, make sure you tell the server if you want bottled water or tap water. I forgot to ask and the server brought out two bottles of expensive bottled water when all I wanted was tap water.
N°5 – Bed Head: Eggs Benedict
I love anything related to Eggs Benedict.
Not surprisingly, I decided to first order the N°5 Bed Head (10 EUR), an Eggs Benedict with two poached eggs, bacon (vegan or meat), Hollandaise sauce, chives, and toast.
If you are vegan, make sure you notify your server that you would like the vegan bacon option. On my visit, when I ordered, the server never asked. Luckily, I love bacon.
If you are a fan of Eggs Benedict, then you already know that the Hollandaise sauce can either break or make the dish. I am happy to report that Chipps’ Hollandaise sauce was great. There was just the right amount of sauce. It wasn’t too thick or thin. It was rich, buttery, seasoned well, and had a slight hint of lemon.
Underneath the sauce were two poached eggs. When I cut into the eggs, I was a little disappointed as the eggs were slightly overcooked. The deep golden egg yolk was not as runny as I would have liked. For the price I paid, I wouldn’t expect to have overcooked eggs.
Below the eggs was a layer of rich, crispy, and smoky bacon. I loved how crunchy the bacon was, giving the dish an added layer of texture. I also found the salty bacon to mix well with the buttery Hollandaise sauce and creamy egg yolk.
At the bottom was a simple and forgettable piece of toast. I would have loved to see an English muffin instead of basic toast.
On the side was a simple yet delightful mixed green salad with arugula, spinach, and baby greens. The fresh salad was lightly mixed in a Dijon mustard vinaigrette which complemented the savory and rich Eggs Benedict.
N°4 – The Morning After: Omelet
Next up was N°4 The Morning After (10 EUR), an omelet with mushrooms, spinach, and tomatoes.
Even though the menu described the dish as an omelet, when it arrived, it appeared to be more of an egg frittata. It was crispy and perfectly burnt on the outside while light and fluffy on the inside.
The omelet was pretty simple. Mixed into the omelet were large chunks of tomatoes, pieces of spinach, and pieces of whole mushrooms. Everything tasted fresh and healthy.
My only complaint with the omelet was that it was under seasoned. I had to add some salt and pepper which made a huge difference in taste.
On the side was the same fresh mixed green salad with the Dijon mustard vinaigrette.
Service
After waiting around initially for a table, the service was friendly and attentive. If you dine at restaurants in Berlin, then you know firsthand that good service is often hard to find in this city.
For such a busy morning, I was surprised how quickly the food arrived (about 10 minutes after ordering).
I only had a few complaints about the service. First, when the server failed to ask if I wanted the meat or vegan option. They failed again to ask if I would like tap water or bottled water. Bottled water is not cheap in Europe.
Conclusion
With freshly prepared dishes using quality ingredients, I highly recommend you stop by Chipps on your next visit to Berlin, whether you stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner,
Even though I had a few issues with service and the food, I would gladly return to Chipps for their freshly made dishes, friendly service, modern decor, panoramic windows, and an outdoor patio that faced a peaceful and quiet open grassy area.
