While searching for places to eat in Iceland, I discovered Sveitagrill Miu (Mia’s Country Grill), a tiny fish and chips food truck located near Skogafoss waterfall. Iceland, waterfalls, fish and chips. In my opinion, it doesn’t get better than that.

If you aren’t familiar with Skogafoss, make sure you add it to your list of must visit places to see in Iceland. At 200 feet tall, Skogafoss is one of the biggest and most powerful waterfalls in the county. With thousands of people making the visit to Skogafoss each day, it’s surprising how many people miss out on this gem hidden in plain sight. Blink and you might miss the cute ladybug painted exterior and the single picnic table.

After a long day of hiking, taking photos, and getting drenched in cold water, you will surely want to make a stop at Sveitagrill Miu for some freshly prepared fish and chips.

Sveitagrill Miu (Mia’s Country Grill) Menu

As you might have noticed already, the menu at Sveitagrill Miu was simple. Only one item: fish and chips.

For 2000 KR (about $17.52), you get a single portion of fish along with your pick of one sauce. Sauces included ketchup, sweet chili sauce, and Icelandic tartar sauce.

Mia prides herself on using fishmongers who provide her with only the freshest fish possible. While the catch of the day is usually cod, as on my visit, it’s not uncommon to find North Atlantic wolffish, haddock, or ling on the menu.

Other than fish and chips, you had your standard choice of sodas, water, and disappointingly weak 2% beer which I passed on.

Fish and Chips

Cod Fish and Chips

You guessed it, but I ordered the Fish and Chips with Icelandic tartar sauce (2000 KR). Each plate, made fresh to order, took about ten minutes to prepare. It’s worth the wait.

As mentioned before, only the freshest of cod was used, and it showed. While simple, the fish could not have been cooked any better. Each bite of the thick and flaky fish was juicy and tender.

With such a fresh piece of fish, the lack of seasoning was not a factor. If you want to make the flavors pop, be sure to sprinkle some sea salt on the fish and chips.

While the cod was the star of the dish, in my opinion, the crust was the most critical component of the dish. Fresh fish with a soggy crust is never fun.

Before the fish was deep fried, the cod was dipped in an Icelandic ale beer batter. The beer, from Ölvisholt Brewery in the south, ensured a light and crispy crust. Each bite had that perfect crunchy bite essential to any fish and chips.

With anything deep fried, you run the risk of a greasy or oily crust. This was not the case. The rich crust was delightfully balanced with a dash of malt vinegar, a sprinkle of sea salt, and a dip in the tartar sauce.

Accompanying the fish was a healthy portion of chips. Just as with the fish, these potatoes were simple yet cooked well. The fresh cut wedge fries were crispy and hot on the outside while tender and warm on the inside.

I almost forgot about the homemade Icelandic tartar sauce. With curry mixed into the sauce, this was not your run-of-the-mill tartar sauce. It was sweeter than expected with a hint of acid from the crunchy diced relish mixed in. The consistency reminded me more of an aioli based sauce. I couldn’t get enough of it and devoured it entirely. I heard from a few others that Mia will gladly refill sauces free of charge.

Service

Being a food truck, I don’t have much to report about the service of Sveitagrill Miu.

The two person team manning the small hut, one taking orders, the other cooking food, were friendly on my visit. Even though they were busy, they let me snap a few photos of the inside operations.

Nothing more to say other than the food arrived quickly, correctly, and steaming hot.

Conclusion

What was amazing about Sveitagrill Miu (Mia’s Country Grill) was its location. Even with huge tour buses passing by en route to Skogafoss waterfall, I felt like the tiny food truck was only known to a special few. I felt like I had this place to my own and that is how I want it to remain.

If you are a traveler, not a tourist, and a lover of food, then I highly recommend you make the stop here. While the fish and chips were delicious, crunchy on the outside while soft and tender on the inside, there was just something special about eating in the shadow of Skogafoss on a rainy and cool afternoon in Iceland.
